Mission:
Mission 0: In the beginning....
Location: Main Sick Bay
Timeline: Md 3 0900 hrs
On:
The corridors of the medical decks were busy with the preparations for the ships mission, two crewmen in black coveralls with open deck crew vests only seemed slightly out of place, two men, an older master chief leading a much younger crewman who was struggling with a cargo cart full of what looked like equipment bags on it, "Come on kid, the doc's and medics need these, let's hussle!"
"Yes sir!" the younger man called out pushing harder on the cart.
As they rounded the corner into the main bay what looked like organized chaos was well under way, medics, nurses and a doctor or two were storing supplies, equipment and other medical needs in the various cabinets and carts that were being staged throughout the main sickbay, in the middle of the chaos was a Cygian that he'd been told was the new head doc, the senior non-commissioned man spoke "Doctor Renard-Aukai, I'm senior flight deck chief Shaw, I'm supposed to be dropping off this stuff and doing an orientation with some of your medics and Doc's about safety on the flight deck during operations and emergency, even if it's just you for now, the skipper wants everyone to get down some of the basics to stay safe once we're underway."
The cygnian's eyes caught the rank on his collar as her eyes drifted up from the data device in her hands, "Master Chief, nice to meet you," She said simply. "I was pararescue at the beginning of my career, so you won't hear an argument from me." Her lips twisted to a bit of a frown, "We're swamped finalizing the components and supplies. A lot of our medical team isn't used to this stage, so we're dealing with a little more stress on that front than I'd like..." She confided without thinking before she continued, "But that's a necessary training. I'm retooling our secondary and tertiary sickbay to be staffed as triage centers prepped to specialize with traumas from Engineering and Flight Control and Away Teams..."
She paused for a second as one of her specialists stepped up next to her. "Doctor," the Aurelian said, handing her a pad. " It looks like a Denobulan intestinal bug." He updated her.
"Master Chief, this is Rial - one of our Senior Corpsmen serving in the role of one of our nursing shift leads," She took a breath, "If you need to do a training now, we'd be the two to start with, and we can start scheduling all team members to go through it in Tertiary after that."
Henry smiled politely and shook hands all around then he pulled a bag off of the cargo cart, "It's real simple in fact," pausing to open the bag, "Starfleet medical teal vest, these are lined with ballistic resistant materials incase debris goes flying, on them is reflective stripes incase the lights go out or visibility is low for whatever reason, Doc this happens to be yours and is marked as so." he said pointing to the doctor's name and Doc on the right of the zipper, "The helmet has hearing protection and again hardened to reduce impact injuries, the eye covering is ballistic rated and tinted against flash and a quick release for the chin strap." he said showing the strapping, "One piece of advice is to follow the lead of the deck crew in orange or white vests if you're not sure what's happening, when we do the launch and recovery drills in a few days time we can go over specifics, I'll try to get the skipper to include doing med-evac so your staff can get used to working with my teams."
"Got it. Are we going to have enough for every staff member, or should they be rationed out to rapid response, triage, and away teams?" Atarangi asked bluntly, examining the materials better. "Either way, nice to have our own rather than marine hand-me-downs like usual."
The senior chief smiled, his age showing "These are the first batch for your staff, they'll mostly be required for flight deck operations, including moving casualties off of shuttles and runabouts, I am going to organize a deck safety walkthrough for each department I'd like to get all of your staff through in the first cycle of sessions so they can feel at least somewhat comfortable being on the deck during operations." he paused looking to his junior crewman "It gives my junior crew a chance to apply their time at the tech school too."
"I can agree to that. I was on an Alita for the last five years, so I'm pretty fresh on the topic," She gave a curt nod, "But I'm interested in seeing the differences between an escort carrier and a full carrier in S-O-P on the deck." She paused a moment, "I'll make it mandatory for my senior team to be part of the first batch. Like you said, I'd like to give the juniors a chance to run things when I'm not far away."
"I'm glad we're in agreement Doc, at some point you'll probably want to check out to the med-evac shuttle too, it's in the lower hangar the technical guys are doing the final inspections along side the other runabouts." The Chief said, "My one tech said he doesn't know much about medical equipment and could use some help."
"I'll send someone down with technical expertise," Atarangi added, before curiosity got the better of her. "What is the medical shuttle, class wise?"
"It's one of those new warhawk class, I think it's configured to carry two or four stretchers with one biobed, it's modded out for speed over a firefight." The senior petty officer said.
"Warhawk?" She spoke softly, nodding as she made a mental note to check those specifications. "Got it. Got it. Anything else Chief?" She asked quickly, but realized how that sounds, "Not that I'm trying to rush you."
"Nah I don't think so doc, I do have a couple of junior guys who need their annuals done I'll send them up when the schedule permits, but I do want to encourage you all to come down to the flight deck for your orientation, there's three big gaps in the off load schedules the next few days, plus it's always nice to have visitors who wanna see the deck in action." the Senior chief said.
"Of course. If the flight deck team allows it, I always loved hanging out in flight lounge... Might haunt it a bit," She admitted, "But I've taken up too much of your time already. Is there anything else I can do for you chief?"
"I think we're on the same page doc, it's good too meet you again." he said shifting to shake hands.
