Physical Description | General Appearance: Atarangi is striking, but welcoming. She embodies a hospitable soul with a near-constant soft smile and optimistic demeanor. She is an islander by nurture, and her warm acacia skin and swimmer’s physique are the most readily apparent signs of that upbringing. She is clearly a hybrid, with strange alien features from two disparate species. Her most striking features are those from her Cygnian bloodline, large, bright yellow catlike eyes, and mouse-like tail. Her Oran’taku side provided her with an abundance of freckles in the middle of her face and tapered ears. She has dark brown hair, which tends to tint the color of her department (currently teal). She wears her hair in a modified undercut/mohawk with the mohawk braided to the back of her head. There, she either ties her hair up into a low topknot or lets it fall into its natural wavy nature. Body Modifications: Atarangi is well known for her very obvious tattoos, encompassing much of her neck, face, and many other places on her body. She isn’t bashful about them and has geometric tattoos from her neck down onto her chest and along her shoulders - and a half sleeve on her left arm that stops at the point her synthetic skin meets organic skin. In addition, she has numerous facial piercings, including septum, Monroe, nose bridge, lower lip, eyebrow, multiple ear piercings, and a gauge lobe piercing on each ear. Though not normally visible, she also has a naval piercing, hip piercings (on either side), and more private piercings. Cybernetics: Her left arm was lost in 2385. It has been replaced with a cybernetic prosthesis with synthetic skin. She made sure that the metal of the joint was visible, but it was usually under a sleeve, and most people would never know she had anything there. Except she tends to take the arm off when it ‘bothers’ her. She also has some synthetic skin on her left side, from her stomach down to her upper thigh - with some internals repaired with cybernetics as well. Style: Aukai has a reputation for eschewing some of the uniform code. She prefers not to wear her rank, for instance, as “it makes patients more comfortable”, and tends to wear solid-colored uniform variants when allowed. She also loves wearing her white coat for a few minutes each day, at least before it ends on the chair or floor on her desk. When off duty, she tends to wear classic tropical clothes - loose, breezy options that may show off more skin than some officers are comfortable with. Of course, she isn’t great in colder weather, so she tends to layer up more than other crew members in those regions. Voice: Aukai has a ‘mousy’ voice. It is higher than people expect for someone her size. She is a soprano singer, and it tends to show as she hums and sings throughout the day. Her voice is somewhat soft normally, with a warmth that shows through to her caring nature rather readily but almost always with a hint of excitability under the surface. |

Personality & Traits
General Overview | If one word were to describe Atarangi’s personality archetype, it would be Protector. She has always been the type to protect others, to bring them back from whatever danger they found themselves in. It was almost a compulsion for her. She needed to provide the protection that she was given to others. Paired with her true believer ideology, she is hopeful, optimistic, and outgoing. She can be too friendly or excitable at times. It can make her appear less than prepared - but those who know her seem to think this is a disguise. She can be best described as a protector, an explorer - someone who enjoys life and wants to make sure those around her also get the chance. |
|
Strengths & Weaknesses | Telepathic Abilities || Atarangi has two powerful telepathic bloodlines coursing through her veins, though neither manifest as straightforwardly as, say, a Betazed’s empathy might. However, through training, she has become attuned to those abilities. As an Oran’Taku, she can sense emotions like Betazoids. However, they are primarily known for their ability to weaken the minds of others, causing a sort of mesmerization or hypnosis and even short-term memory loss. Cygnian telepathic abilities allow them to detect the actions of others within a short range. Telepathic Limitations || Oran’Taku physiology limits her telepathic abilities to skin-to-skin contact with the target. That contact must also be against live nerves—or it does not work. She cannot sense emotions from a distance or use her other telepathic abilities. Her Cygnian telepathy has a better range but is still limited to being within a meter or so of a person. Bioluminescent Scan || One strange aspect of her Oran’Taku heritage is that her telepathic abilities require touch (see below), but in doing so, they cause a connection of nerves. When connected, she can cause a creature's natural bioluminescence to rise, allowing her to visually scan a creature's nervous system. This ability is limited in its use cases and is only helpful in medical situations. It is, however, also a fascinating party trick. Complex Retinal Structure || Oran’Taku have a complex retinal structure, letting them see an incredible variety of wavelengths of light. Cygnians are known for their large, catlike eyes. The two seem to have provided her with a powerful and precise vision spectrum when paired. Her natural night vision is exceptional. Cybernetics || Her cybernetics are limited and mostly for prosthesis purposes. They don’t provide many benefits but could theoretically be augmented. Hybrid Biology || Hybrids have a number of issues that others don’t expect. They tend to have odd reactions to medications, odd immune systems, and unexpected quirks that crop up as they age. Atarangi is no different. Specialist || She is a specialist. If you need a doctor in an emergency, a pararescue operator, or a singer, she’s your girl. Beyond that, she’ll have to write you a referral. Traumatic Background || Atarangi came into life traumatically, and while she’s been able to find peace in some places - plenty of traumas followed. She vividly remembers the Dominion Wars, the hushed waiting for any word from their father, the attack on Earth by the Borg, by the Breen, and just the general life of a emergency/trauma specialist in the medical field. |
|
Ambitions | She is a bit listless at the moment. She wants to help others, whatever that means. | |
Hobbies & Interests | Music || Her parents were quick to enroll her in music classes as a child, and she did well but excelled after growing into her telepathic powers. She sings and can play a few different instruments—specifically in the string family. She was a member of the Starfleet Academy Choir and the Golden Gate Off Broadway Group during the 2383-4 season. Still, she opted not to continue investing her time in that field to concentrate on the Academy. Combat Sports || Atarangi loves combat sports. She practices her adoptive homeland's martial arts, wrestling styles, and Starfleet Marine Corps hand-to-hand competitions. Because of her Cygnian abilities, she is exceptionally skilled—though she is not often allowed in competitive arenas against those without telepathy. Water Sports || She loves water sports. She is an avid sailor, surfer, swimmer, windsurfer, and all-around water lover. If you want to know where to find her on leave, look for areas with water. |
Personal History | Atarangi Aukai was born on the Sixth of May, 2365, during a Breen attack on a Cygnian colony. Then Lieutenant Nicholas Renard was able to evacuate Halani Torana to the USS Jericho, but she died. The medical staff was able to save the child. When it was discovered that Averan Lokal had died in the attack as well, the young hybrid was marked as an orphan. Unable to contact any kin (as most had been killed in the attack), she was scheduled to be sent to one of the colonial orphanages. Lieutenant Renard and Maia Aukai, who had just given birth to her daughter Eriki, discussed the option of adopting her. Given that they already had a pair of twins, they chose to make it an even four and adopted and named Atarangi Aukai. She was raised as a twin on Earth in Dunedin, New Zealand. She was inseparable from her sister and grew up like one would expect a normal kid to grow up, at least one with a father in the fleet. She was a fighter from the get. She seemed to almost enjoy fighting with her brothers and became a natural protector for her sister. But, there were a few times she needed to step into that role. Their lives were mostly calm, and their siblings lived good lives. Atarangi’s telepathic powers began to manifest around her twelfth birthday, and thanks to her father’s connections, she was able to begin training with the Daystrom Research Institute in Okinawa. She was able to gain control of her powers rather quickly, but surprisingly, she used them for artistic pursuits. For a long time, it looked as if she would be a musician - but at 17, she applied for early admission to Starfleet Academy, and was accepted. She had a track in mind - and studied Medical, with a minor in Security. Her mind had been made up. She has since served with distinction. She was critically injured during the Synth Attack on Mars, where she had her left arm torn off and was shot by a Synth at close range. Marine Corps members were able to pull her to safety. Afterward, she solidified her plans, signing up for Starfleet Medical while she recovered physically. As soon as she was finished, she signed up for a Rapid Response Pararescue team aboard the USS Derna. She did her residency while serving in a high-risk role. She continued to serve in similar roles until she was offered a role aboard the USS Arash, serving on a 3-year exploratory mission. There, she primarily served as an Away Team Medical Officer but spent quite a bit of time in sickbay in general. She enjoyed her time here, and at the suggestion of that ship’s CMO, she was transferred to the USS Anansi at the end of that tour. Here, she would become more interested in the command side of things. She quickly pushed to grow her career, sure that her unique background could get her into the role of a CMO someday. During Frontiers Day 2401, she and the Anansi crew were part of the Fleet action and, as such, part of the battle. She and her expertise allowed the veteran crew of the Anansi to regain some control of their ship and delay their Group from doing more damage than it did, buying crucial time for the other members of the fleet to put an end to the threat. Unlike many officers there that day, Aukai put in a request to join the USS Tecumseh as CMO mere days later - when a family connection let her know that the spaceframe had been pulled and slated for active duty in the aftermath. |
