Overview

The type 5a heavy phaser rifle was conceived during the height of the unending Borg raids that took place from the post Wolf 359 era until the present era. While tests with ballistic weaponry was highly successful ballistic weapons were not always practical in some cases. While retaining some of the essentials of the Type 3 the type 5 is equipped with a highly variable frequency rotation chip along with variation of bandwidth to counter Borg done shielding 85% of the time.

Starfleet has limited the use of the type 5 at this time as Borg activity has severely curtailed but most starbases will have adequate supply should the need arise in the future.
