Overview

After a long stretch of warfare with the Dominion, as well as several Borg incursions in the last two decades, it has become necessary for Starfleet to update its small arms. Enhanced range, optics and projectile capability are the most notable improvements to the Type XIIa "Scimitar" Battle Rifle. Minor improvements have been made in phaser power cell capacity, ergonomics, and overall versatility.

In addition to the standard 22 setting pulse phaser, the XIIa has the ability to fire two distinct sizes of projectile cartridges. These cartridges are to be used in the event of a dampening field, electromagnetic interference, or if the hostile has the ability to absorb particle weapon energy. The primary cartridge is a 6.5x40mm tritanium slug; designed to penetrate standard body armor plate and boasting an impressive effective range of 600m.

The secondary cartridge is the M-12g underslung 18.5mm weapons system. Designed to supplement a rifle's capabilities by adding high explosive munitions capabilities. It fires 18.53mm grenades via an electronic firing system. Various forms of ammunition choices are available: High Explosive, Air Burst, Smoke, and Gas as well as several special purpose munitions including illumination rounds.

The M-12S Underslung shotgun is a weapon attachment designed along side the M-12G and shares many of the same parts as well its compatibility. It is a semi automatic shotgun that attaches to the underside of a weapon via a rail system. The system was electronically fired, and each magazine contains three 18mm shotgun shells that were loaded into the breach of the weapon. Ammunition types included shot and slugs as well as less lethal projectiles.
